3 creative ways to use canvas cloth

Pop into your local Builders Warehouse and you will find a selection of canvas dropcloths in various sizes.

Because canvas is ideal for outdoor use, it can be easily painted and you could use it to transform a plain patio or garden room with a painted dropcloth curtain.

Canvas is a durable fabric that is great for both indoor and outdoor projects and in this feature we will show you how you can use canvas dropcloths for indoor and outdoor décor projects.

Hang up some curtains

Transform a plain patio or garden room with a painted dropcloth curtain. Because canvas is ideal for outdoor use, it can be easily painted.

Using a paint roller and acrylic paint you can easily paint designs onto the dropcloths.

The best paint to use is a matt or low sheen PVA, as this adheres better to the fabric.

First you need to mask off the areas that you don't want to paint with masking tape and then simply roll on the colour.

Need to cover up an old sofa or chair? Use a large canvas dropcloth to drape over the top. Canvas is 100 percent washable, so you don't need to worry about keeping it clean.

For custom-made curtains, cut your canvas dropcloth to fit the window and hem it on all sides. Add fabric panels or trim if you want a dressier look. You can sew hems and trim, or you can use iron-on bonding.

Top off your new curtains with curtain clips and your new curtains are ready to hang up.

To hang the curtains, visit your fabric store and see what options they have available.

You will find eyelet kits in various sizes.

Alternatively, add some tabs to the top of your curtain for hanging onto a pole.

Cover up a sofa

If you prefer a more formal look for your upholstered furniture and are pretty handy with a sewing machine, you can easily use canvas dropcloths to make custom slipcovers for all your furniture.

To add detail to your canvas dropcloth, you can use iron-on webbing to attach contrasting trim, or buy transfer paper for your PC printer and then print out a design to iron on.

And don't forget that you can also use paint to add designs to your dropcloth sofa cover.

An easy trick for keeping the dropcloth in place on a sofa or chair is to use a pool noodle.

The noodle grips the fabric and holds it in place when pushed down the back of the sofa or chair. And it's easy to remove when you need to wash the dropcloth.
