The oldest town in the Central Karoo, Beaufort West is famed as being the birth place of world renowned heart surgeon, Chris Barnard, who performed the first successful heart transplant. The town was established in 1818 by Lord Somerset and named after his father, the fifth Duke of Beaufort.
