Franschhoek
Steeped in history, Franschhoek is one of the oldest towns in the Western Cape. Originally settled by the Huguenots who fled France in 1688, Franschoek was first known as Olifantshoek, due to the vast herds of elephant that once roamed the area. The houses and homes for sale in Franschhoek still display much of the French culture and history, with the various wine estates in the area retaining many of the original farmhouses. The heritage is immortalized in the Huguenot Monument that stands at the top of the town’s main road.
There are numerous houses and homes to be found in the town that follow a Cape Dutch style of architecture and restrictions have been placed on the extent of renovations and new construction that can take place within the town. This has worked to preserve the quaint village atmosphere in keeping with the spirit of the original settlers in the area.
