Kakamas
Find property for sale in Kakamas, a town found in South Africa’s Northern Cape that takes its name from the Khoi word ‘gagamas’ (brown), which refers to the red clay in the area used by tribal women to paint their faces. The same word means “poor pasture” in Koranna, but this is not a good reflection on what is a fertile valley today. The properties for sale in Kakamas are mostly farms and smallholdings, with a range of residential houses and homes, some commercial property and vacant land to buy.
The Koranna word might well refer back to a drought in 1895 that lasted two years and led to an outbreak of rinderpest, which left a multitude of farmers in the Kakamas area destitute. The river islands of Marchand, Zoetap and Neus were used as a labour colony for the poor and their subsequent farming ventures were so successful that they were soon granted full title to the land.
