Umkomaas
A small coastal town in Kwazulu Natal, Umkomaas began its existence when a harbour was built at the mouth of the Mkhomazi River in 1861 to export sugar. However, with the successful dredging of the sandbar in Durban and the arrival of the railway, the harbour suffered and soon fell into disuse. The properties for sale in Umkomaas mostly cater for the holiday market, with a variety of houses and apartments to buy, as well as vacant land in the outlying areas.
The river name means “place of the cow whales”, which refers to the estuary and the large number of whales that used it as a nursery to birth their calves. A dominant feature in the Umkomaas landscape, the river is also popular with watersport enthusiasts and there are occasionally raft and canoe races. Those who buy property here have the choice of both river and ocean activities to take part in, even if it’s just for a scenic walk.
