The largest town on the Kwazulu Natal coastline, Port Shepstone was founded in 1867 when a discovery of marble deposits was made on both riverbanks near the Mzimkulu River mouth. A harbour was soon established at the river mouth to facilitate trade between here and Durban, with the main exports being marble, lime and sugar. The properties for sale in Port Shepstone range from residential homes and apartments, to holiday houses and flats, with various stands and commercial properties to buy.
The arrival of 200 Norwegian settlers who intended to farm the area spurred the development of Port Shepstone and by 1893 the harbour functioned as fully fiscal. When the railway reached the town from Durban, the harbour fell into disuse and eventually the river silted up, making it impossible to use.
