Mtunzini

MTUNZINI is a Hidden Coastal Village in Zululand, also known as Natal North Coast, just 45kms South of Richards Bay and 110kms North of the New King Shaka Airport.

There are no properties right on the Beach because there is a protected Nature Area between the village and the Sea.

There is 24 kilometers of beach between the River Mounth on the Northern side and Amatikulu to the South.

Vehicles are now only permitted in a very small area, mostly for drivers with canoes, jet skis, ski boats, etc.

The name of MTUNZINI - is Zulu for "place in the shade" and was given to the village by the indigenous tribal people at the turn of the century when they used to hold important meetings under the Trees when the famous Mr Dunn visited the area.

MTUNZINI has the usual wide variety of properties - some with Sea Views and others with Mountain/Inland views which provide fascinating Sunset views. The residents in the area are cross-section of people, who closely monitor their ecological heritage.

The local sugar farmers in the area had a great effect on the village. Some residents are retired, others have holiday houses or simplexes and many work in the surrounding areas such as Zululand University, Empangeni, RichardsBay and Isithebe.

Mtunzini boasts a large variety of Birds so is a bird watcher's paradise offering some of the rarest species in the world, most notably the Palm Nut Vulture, which feeds on the fruit of the Raphia Palm, producing fruit once every twenty years before dying.

The Raphia Palm was introduced to Mtunzini by Mr Colin Foxon many years ago.

The Lagoon is excellent for water-sking and an easy way to visit the Mouth which used to be accessible by vehicle.
