Found in Kwazulu Natal Midlands area, Vryheid literally means freedom and was once the capital of the Nieuwe Republiek, becoming a focal point for the German immigration that still informs the town today. There is much historical significance in Vryheid, with a range of Tudor and Edwardian architecture on display. After the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879, the British decided to split Zululand into thirteen petty states in a bid to exert more control over the tribal elements. There was much bickering between the tribes, with Chief Dinizulu employing the services of hundreds of mercenaries, who demanded land as payment.
