The second biggest city in Kwazulu Natal and found in the Midlands, Pietermartizburg is also the province’s capital and was founded in 1838. It is often referred to as the “last outpost of the British empire” due to its genteel English country atmosphere. Petermaritzburg comprises both urban and rural living, with various homes and apartments for sale in the residential suburbs, as well as farms and smallholdings for sale in the outlying areas. The town is filled with history and there are examples of old Victorian architecture to be found all over.
Although Pietermaritsburg has an English country feel, it was in fact established by the Voortrekkers following the defeat of Dingane at the Battle of Blood River and became the capital of the short lived Boer Republic. Britain took over Pietermaritzburg in 1843 and it became the seat of the Natal Colony’s administration. In 1910, Natal became
