Rayton
The little town of Rayton is located close to the historical mining town of Cullinan. It was named after the first manager of the Montrose Daimond Mining Company, Colonel Balliston’s wife – Lady Rachel Ray Williston. Besides the fact that Rayton become a bit of a ghost town after the Second World War, it is today a bustling little town, which boasts some fine examples of classic architecture.
Just like its neighbour Cullinan, Rayton has evolved from the discovery of diamonds in the area. Many aspiring miners came to this part of South Africa in the hope of finding diamonds. Today, the nearby Premier Daimond Mine is a world-renowned mine and is the third largest producer of diamonds in South Africa.
