Cullinan
The charming village of Cullinan, located 30km east of Pretoria, is best know as the place where the largest rough gem-quality diamond was ever mined. The stone, known as the Cullinan Daimond was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan who owned the mine at the time of the discovery. History recorded that this diamond was then cut into three parts – one of which is part of the British crown jewels displayed in Tower of London today.
Cullinan has over the years managed to hold on to much of its mine village character including the stone and corrugated iron houses where the mineworkers used to reside as well as offices and churches dating back to the early 1900’s.
One of Cullinan’s many attractions include Oak Avenue, complete with beautifully preserved Edwardian buildings with picket fences and little gardens. In this tree-lined avenue you will also find a number of restaurants and coffee shops.
Property in Cullinan consists of a number of houses, smallholdings and farms. To this day, this quaint town still serves the premier mine in the area, known as the third largest diamond mine in South Africa.
