Originally established as a railway station in 1894, it was recognized as a town in 1905 and named after the Bronkhorst family who lived in the area. Bronkhorstspruit’s main claim to fame is that one of its suburbs, Cultura Park houses the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere.
