Nigel
A small gold mining town in the East Rand in Gauteng, Nigel is literally the industrial engine room of Johannesburg, with a diverse spread of industrial and commercial properties for sale. A prospector reading Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Fortunes of Nigel found gold on the farm Varkensfontein and immediately established the Nigel Gold Mining Company, which is also how the town derived its name. Others believe that it was the prospector’s name and the town was called after him. The various residential areas in Nigel have a number of houses and apartments for sale.
The mine closed down in 1917 and was only reopened for a short time in 1933, triggering a mini boom in combination with various other mines reopened in the area.
