Located in the Gauteng Province of South Africa, Heidelberg is found at the foot of the Suikerbosrand and was founded as a trading station in 1862. The area served as the capital of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek during the first war of independence from 1880 - 1883. Heidelberg is most known for the Witwatersrand gold reef, which was discovered here in 1885.
