A gold and uranium mining town in Gauteng, Brakpan originated from a small pan farm called Weltevreden. The farm was home to a brackish pan and it was near here that the first coal settlement was established, after a seam was discovered in 1888. It was not long before gold was also discovered here and the first two shafts were sunk in Brakpan in 1905. The various industries supported by the town have ensured that there are a number of residential areas that have developed, offering a range of houses and homes, apartments and flats for sale in Brakpan.
Its claim to fame at the time was that Brakpan was home to the world’s highest mine dump. At 120 metres above ground level, this was higher than all of the pyramids in Egypt, save of course the Pyramid of Cheops.
