Found in the Freestate, Bethlehem is renowned as the largest commercial, industrial and educational centre in the east of the province and the northern terminus of the Mountain Route. The original settlers discovered that wheat flourished in the area, which explains the name meaning “house of bread”. An interesting story surrounds the cairn of rocks found about 8kms outside of town.
