A coastal town in the Eastern Cape, Port St Johns is often referred to as the “jewel of the Wild Coast” and is part of a 250km stretch of beach. The area is reputedly named after a Portuguese ship that wrecked here in 1552, though some believe that it comes from a rock formation east of Umzimvubu that reminded mariners of the evangelist Saint John. Whatever the case, there are a number of properties for sale in Port St Johns, including residential homes and apartments, holiday houses and flats, as well as vacant land to buy.
The harbour became the accepted port of call for trade with the Pondo and other local tribes and the British decided that it was essential to exert control over the area, particularly as foreign powers might use it to run guns.
