Zinkwazi Beach Property | North Coast

Zinkwazi is a popular coastal resort located on the North Coast in KwaZulu Natal about 80 kilometres from Durban.  Also known as the Dolphin Coast, this part of the province is literally the jewel of the Zulu kingdom and the heart of the historical King Shaka route.  Its name translates from Zulu as ‘home of the fish eagles’, which is apt in that their haunting cry is still part of the magical atmosphere here.

People have been attracted to the natural beauty of Zinkwazi since the early days. The nomadic “strandlopers” landed in the stretch of coastal line between the Nonoti and Tugela rivers about 300-100AD. They settled here because food was abundant and they also enjoyed relaxing on the beach area just south of Zinkwazi Lagoon. According to archaeological discoveries they mainly chose this spot because of the area's natural springs overflowing with sweet water - one of these springs still flowing freely today.

Much later, in 1824, the first white settlers started arriving in Natal. A merchant from Cape Town is known to have bought the first sea-facing land for a mere 4 shillings per acre for 633 acres. Four years later he sold the land for 2 pounds an acre – that’s a1000% profit!

Zinkwazi is a magnificent nature conservancy that offers a unique coastal eco-experience with endless golden beaches complemented by tropical palms and lush indigenous forests.  There is a superb bird life in the conservancy that is bound to impress nature enthusiasts, as well as 7 kilometres of untouched lagoon on which to feast the senses.  When it comes to watching birds and animals in their natural habitat, there really is no better place than right here.

You can take a ferry ride along the Zinkwazi lagoon, which is ideal for bird spotting upriver, as well as wine tasting or simply lapping up the relaxing atmosphere.  Golf enthusiasts have a number of excellent courses to choose from here and in the surrounding area, including those in Umhlali, Mount Edgecombe and Durban.  History buffs might be interested to know that an Anglo-Zulu battlefield is nearby.  Whatever you’re looking for, when it comes to coastal property, Zinkwazi Beach offers some of the best along the Dolphin Coast.
