White River Property | Mpumalanga

White River is located in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province and is home to a variety of craftsmen and artists.  It is a convenient point from which to base excursions into the countryside and explore what delights the province has to offer, with the escarpment, waterfalls and historic sites.  There is also the Lowveld Botanical Garden within the vicinity, boasting stunning displays of indigenous flora, including cycads and baobabs.

Dutch farmers first settled the area around White River in the 1890s.  After the Second Anglo Boer War, a settlement was established here for demobilized soldiers on the Witrivier farm.  Soon after this, an irrigation canal was constructed to carry water from the Mamazimhlophe River, which is a tributary of the Crocodile River, to smallholdings in the region.  These pieces of arable land were being offered to settlers on extremely favourable terms.

The name White River is a reference to the large amounts of kaolin suspended in the water.  There are more than 3000 farmers living on smallholdings in the area today, producing a variety of fruit, vegetables, flowers and timber.  The excellent climate and fertile soil in Mpumalanga ensure perfect conditions for agricultural production.  Those interested in property in White River are generally farmers or those looking to retire in the countryside.
