Uitenhage Property | Eastern Cape

Uitenhage is a town in the Eastern Cape and is most well known for the Volkswagen factory located here, which is the biggest car manufacturing plant on the African continent.  Other places within reach are the small town of Despatch and the sprawling urban centre of Port Elizabeth.

Founded in April 1804 by the district magistrate at the time, Uitenhage is named after the Cape’s then Commissioner General, Jacob Abraham Uitenhage de Mist.  For a short time, it formed part of the Graaff Reinet district and became a municipality in 1877.  Since then it has become a large industrial area, which is mostly geared towards the automotive industry.

Uitenhage was once the official and cultural centre of the Eastern Cape and still retains much of this historical heritage, with some superb examples of settler and Victorian architecture to be found here.  There are a number of museums to visit, not to mention the beautiful parks and gardens in the area.  If you are looking for property then Uitenhage could be just the place for you.
