The Southern Suburbs are Cape Town’s oldest and most sought after of the city’s established residential areas. Renowned for its oak tree lined avenues and leafy neighbourhoods, the properties here are generally on the expensive side, depending on which area you are interested in. There is also a rich history and tradition that has been upheld through the years in the various outstanding schools in the area. Some of the Cape Peninsula’s best restaurants and shopping centres are located in the vicinity and there is an excellent road network.
The commercial heart of the Southern Suburbs lies in Claremont, which houses the Cavendish Shopping Centre and a number of other retail and business sectors. Observatory or "Obs" is home to the world famous Groote Schuur Hospital and is also known for its eclectic community, comprised largely of students, artists and academics. Rondebosch is a vibrant residential area that is most well known as being where the prestigious University of Cape Town is located and consequently has a community similar to that in nearby Mowbray and Observatory.
The most affluent suburbs in this particular part of the Cape Peninsula are Bishops Court and Constantia, with the former often referred to as the embassy belt. Kenilworth lies with the Constantia winelands on one side and the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on the other, while Newlands is synonymous with all kinds of international sporting events, particularly rugby and cricket events. Further on from here lie the predominantly residential areas of Wynberg and Plumstead. Pinelands has a decidedly English-feel, as the suburb was established after the Anglo-Boer War and is located close to Rosebank, which is another suburb that caters largely for university students in the area. The number of suburbs is far more extensive than those mentioned and there is no doubt that property in the Southern Suburbs is sought-after, not only for its prime location, but for its top quality accommodation. |
