Richards Bay Property | North Coast

Richards Bay happens to be South Africa’s biggest harbour and is situated on a 30 square kilometre lagoon at the mouth of the Mhlatuze River.  This part of KwaZulu Natal’s North Coast was initially set up as a makeshift harbour by the Commodore of the Cape, Sir Frederick Richards during the Boer War of 1879.  Nearly a hundred years later, the area was converted into a deep-water harbour with a railway and oil and gas pipeline linking the port to Johannesburg.

In 1935, a game sanctuary was created in Richards Bay to protect the ecology surrounding the lagoon and later this expanded into a park.  The town was laid out on the shores of the lagoon in 1954 and gained municipal status seven years later.  Since then an aluminium smelter and fertilizer plant have been set up near the harbour and titanium is mined from the sand dunes close to the lagoon.  The mining and harbour activities that take place here make it an economic hub in the KwaZulu Natal region.

Anyone interested in Richards Bay will know that it is also a popular kitesurfing destination thanks to the consistent winds blowing in from the northeast.  Another of the area’s claims to fame is the Coal Terminal, which happens to be the biggest coal export facility in the world and plans on a capacity of 91 million tons per annum by the first half of 2009.  With a healthy mix of industry and leisure activity, it’s no wonder that property in Richards Bay is such an attractive investment option.
