Port Shepstone Property | South Coast

Port Shepstone is one of the biggest coastal towns on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast and subsequently one of the most popular when it comes to property investment.  Marble was found in the 1860s on the northern bank of the Mzimkulu River and this inspired the initial settlement here, which resulted in opening up the mouth of the river for shipping purposes.  William Bazley succeeded in doing this and from 1880, ships could sail into the river.

The town of Port Shepstone was first laid out in 1882 and a group of 246 Norwegian immigrants settled here over the course of that year.  The railway opened in 1901 and saw the harbour fall into disuse and the river eventually silted up making it impossible for ships to pass through anymore.  This South Coast town takes its name from the former Natal Secretary for Native Affairs, Theophilus Shepstone.  There is a museum here that details the fascinating history of the town’s development and the cast iron lighthouse at the mouth of the river was erected in 1906.

Port Shepstone has become a popular tourist destination over the years and is renowned for its unspoiled beaches and warm waters rich in marine life.  Residents and visitors can take full advantage of the excellent swimming and diving conditions, as well as the opportunity to snorkel.  There is also rafting, boating, canoeing and all kinds of watersport activities to keep you entertained.  The Oribi Gorge boasts some of the most spectacular rocky outcrops and the world’s highest commercial abseil at 110 metres.  If you are looking for the ultimate in seaside lifestyle and entertainment then property in Port Shepstone could be just what you are looking for.
