Pietermaritzburg Property | Natal Midlands

Pietermaritzburg is without a doubt one of the most attractive residential cities in the Natal Midlands region of South Africa and still carries an air of historical significance, with many of the buildings and properties reflecting the area’s time under British rule.  The city was first founded in 1838 and now forms the capital and second largest city in the Kwa Zulu Natal province.  Today, the area is more often known as Maritzburg and forms home to a large student population who attend the University of KwaZulu Natal.

Pietermaritzburg owes its establishment to the Voortrekkers, who made it the capital of the Boer Republic, Natalia shortly after the defeat of Dingane at the Battle of Blood River.  The British took over in 1843 and Maritzburg became the seat of the Natal Colony’s administration and received responsibility to form their own government in 1893.  In 1910, the Union of South Africa was formed and Natal became a formal province with the capital remaining the same.  Since then the region has grown in leaps and bounds, with a vibrant economy based largely on aluminium, timber and dairy products, as well as other business concerns.

Nestled in the lush Natal Midlands valley, Pietermaritzburg is renowned for its abundant greenery and leafy residential suburbs with a wealth of colonial architecture to complement the picturesque surroundings.  The setting of this part of Kwazulu Natal is truly majestic, with the world famous Drakensberg Mountains not far off and the coast within a short drive.  The area is well known for its excellent schools and academic institutions and there is a superb infrastructure in place to service the ever-growing community.  When it comes to buying property in Natal, one of the ultimate cities has to be Pietermaritzburg.
