Parys Property | Free State

Parys is a quaint little country town situated in South Africa’s Freestate province that lies on the southern banks of the Vaal River.  About an hour outside of Johannesburg, the area is named after the French capital, which also lies on the banks of a river.  The most interesting attraction here is the Vredefort Dome, which marks the spot of the oldest and biggest meteorite impact site in the world.

Parys is largely comprised of a farming community, with agricultural production including tobacco, maize, sorghum and cattle.  It has also become a popular town to visit, particularly because of its proximity to Johannesburg and the art and antique shops that pepper the town.  There are some stunning hiking trails in the surrounding countryside, as well as the opportunity to river raft, abseil or take on a 4x4 route.

The Vaal River stretches for about a kilometre near Parys and its shores are lined with weeping willows, watching over the tranquil waters.  There is a country club situated on Golf Island where residents and visitors can play 9 holes of golf.  The Vredefort Dome has been the focus of plenty of geological and geophysical attention and measures about 250 kilometres across.  It was recently declared South Africa’s 7th World Heritage Site and the unbelievable view from the top of the mountain overlooking the dome is well worth a look.  If you are interested in Freestate property then Parys could offer just the kind of lifestyle you need.
