Namakwa Property | Northern Cape

The Namakwa region of the Northern Cape extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the small town of Pofadder in the east, north from the Orange River and south beyond Garies.  The area is renowned for the annual explosion of colour during the wild flower season, which draws spectators from all over the Cape. Sutherland is famous as the home of astronomy in South Africa, with a giant telescope and crystal clear skies.

After the winter rains, Namaqualand takes on an entirely different face, with a riot of different colours invading the countryside, which is in stark contrast to the arid summer months.  Springbok is the administrative capital of the Namakwa region and was established after the discovery of copper in 1850.  The town still retains remnants of the old miner days and the synagogue built in 1929 is now a museum.  Port Nolloth was also established as a copper port in the 1850s and was in use for shipping purposes until well into the 20th century.

Voolsdrift is another town found in the Northern Cape’s Namakwa region and lies on the southern bank of the Orange River.  Alluvial diamonds are mined at Alexander Bay, which is a high security area with limited access to permit holders.  A thriving agricultural centre is Kamieskroon, which is renowned for its stunning wild flowers in spring.  Nababeep is a mining town that uses modern copper mining and smelting methods and is home to Namaqualand’s Mining Museum.  Anyone looking for property in this part of South Africa would do well to consider the Namakwa region.
