Mtwalume Property | South Coast

Mtwalume is a relatively small seaside resort on KwaZulu Natal’s South Coast that takes its name from a tree.  The Zulu tribesmen traditionally use the bark of the mtwalume tree as a cure for dysentery.  George Robert Parsons discovered gold in the river here in 1868 and in the following two years, some 20 ounces of gold were recovered.

There is a quaint appeal to Mtwalume, as it comes across as a rural wooded environment covered by an abundance of indigenous flora and fauna.  It is mainly a holiday resort and fishing village and boasts untouched sandy beaches, lush vegetation and stunning views of the Indian Ocean.  The warm waters make it ideal for swimming and there are a number of tidal pools to keep young families happy.

The main feature in this part of Natal’s South Coast is the Mtwalume River, which forms a beautiful lagoon where it meets with the ocean.  Approximately 85 kilometres long, the river is popular with watersport enthusiasts and is a prime spot for scuba diving and angling.  There are often windsurfers and surf boarders to be found taking on the wind and the waves.  Residents and visitors can hike up to the spectacular falls, bird watch or simply soak up the sun.  With such a wealth of activity to keep you entertained and beautiful coastal surroundings, it’s no wonder that property in Mtwalume is so sought after.
