Midrand Property | Johannesburg

Midrand is one of Johannesburg’s many suburbs and is renowned for the rural atmosphere and warm hospitality.  Part of the Gauteng province in South Africa, it forms a buffer between the city, Pretoria and the O.R. Tambo International Airport.  The area owes its existence to the settlers who arrived on the banks of the Jukskei River and established a sophisticated iron smelting plant here over a thousand years ago.

The Midrand area was developed as a major stop for traveling horsemen and other animal drawn traffic during the 1880s, which explains its earlier name of Halfway House.  The region comprised relatively small agricultural enterprises during this time and only in 1981 did the area win municipal status, leading to its change in name.  It has since become South Africa’s fastest growing city and the most rapidly developing investment centre on the African continent.

Midrand embraces a proudly holistic development approach to the minimization of social and economic inequality, where the public realm becomes the expression of a commitment to the good in society.  Despite its burgeoning growth, it maintains a country lifestyle and the residential properties are generally larger than most, as are the agricultural smallholdings, which continues to give a rural feel to the property in Midrand.
