Krugersdorp Park Property | Johannesburg

Krugersdorp forms part of the greater Johannesburg area in South Africa’s Gauteng province and owes its name to former president Paul Kruger.  The area is famous the world over for the nearby fossil hominid sites at Sterkfontein, Swartkrans and Kromdraai, which were recently declared world heritage sites.

Apart from the fossils of extinct animals and birds found in the various sites near Krugersdorp, a discovery in 1947 made world headlines.  The skull of a hominid about 2 million years old was found and has since been hailed as the ‘missing link’ between man and ape, offering some proof for theories of evolution.  The skull is known as Mrs Ples, short for the scientific term Plesianthropus transvaalensis.

Krugersdorp was initially founded in 1887 on the Paardekraal farm and served as an administrative centre for the public gold diggings proclaimed in and around the area.  The government later granted funds for trees to be planted and today the town still offers plenty of shade and attractive parks, despite being an industrial hub.  There is a wide range of residential property available in the Krugersdorp area.
