Kroonstad Property | Free State

Kroonstad is part of South Africa’s Freestate province and is said to be one of the country’s most beautiful towns.  It lies on the banks of the Vals River, which is a tributary of the better known Vaal River, roughly two hours drive from Johannesburg.  The name is Afrikaans for ‘crown town’, but despite the allusion to royalty, the area is said to have had relatively humble beginnings.

Apparently, Kroonstad is named after a horse that once belonged to a Voortrekker leader, although the jury is undecided as to whom.  It is a toss up between Sarel Celliers and Adriaan de la Rey, who may or may not have met with an accident in a stream called Kroonspruit.  Whatever the case, there is no denying the fact that this part of the country is utterly stunning, characterized by wide open spaces and lush vegetation.

Kroonstad is a quaint Freestate town that serves as an excellent stop off point on the way from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg, as it lies at virtually the halfway mark.  There are some fine examples of Herbert Baker architecture to be seen here, such as the Post Office, the Standard Bank building and the City Hall.  The residents can take part in an array of activities, including flea markets, a tea garden, various walking and hiking trails, game viewing and fishing on the Vals River.  If you are interested in buying property in a serene and rewarding environment then Kroonstad could be just the place to invest.
