The Klein Karoo is a long valley in the Western Cape bordered by the Swartberg and Langeberg Mountains and forms the southern part of the greater Karoo area. Known as the land of succulents, the vegetation is extremely diverse and unparalleled anywhere else in the world. In fact, the lack of trees and bush gives the region the appearance of very dry, flat land devoid of living matter, but this is not the case.
Herds of buffalo, elephant and kudu once roamed these parts, but have since been driven out by hunters and modern development. The climate is perfect for ostriches though and there are numerous farms that exploit these flightless birds for their eggs, feathers and meat. The Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn are an extremely popular attraction, as are the various national parks and nature reserves.
The semi arid climate and winter rainfall creates microclimates, which allow the various winemakers in the area to produce a wide variety of quality wines. Proving its cultural significance, the region hosts a National Arts Festival each year, showcasing a range of South African artistic talent. Interesting villages and hamlets like Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Barrydale and Uniondale pop up throughout the Klein Karoo.
Barrydale is a little town nestled at the foot of the Langeberge in the heart of the Tradouw valley. It is located on Route 62 – known as the longest wine route in the world. It is also set on the border of the Overberg and the Little Karoo.
The climate in Barrydale is ideal for growing fruit trees that can be seen in the various apple, pear, orange and peach orchards in the valley, which is easy accessible from both the Garden Route side and from Outshoorn. You will also find brandy and wine cellars set in their own region of origin - the Tradouw Valley.
Also located on Route 62 is Carlitzdorp - know for its production of world-class ports. The dry climate here is similar as the Duoiro valley in Portugal, which makes it so ideal for producing port.
The beauty of this peaceful haven can largely be attributed to the fact that it is bounded on three sides by mountain ranges, including Swartberg, Rooiberge and the mountains of Huisriver Pass.
Calitsdorp’s main street – Queen Street – host some fine examples of Edwardian and Victorian, and Karoo style buildings influenced by English architecture.
Ladismith (not to be confused with Ladysmith in Kwa-Zulu Natal) lies at the foot of the Towerkop Mountains on the famous Route 62. It is also ideally located around 300km from Cape Town.
Property in Ladismith is unique in the sense that it evolved from a mixture of several styles like Victorian, Neo-gothic, Edwardian, Cape Dutch, Regency and Rural.
This picturesque town is essentially known for its successful farming community that produces fruit, milk, wine, flowers and mutton. More importantly is the 2 cheese factories – Parmalat and Ladismith Cheese.
Uniondale is a charming little town in the Klein Karoo, located close to the popular towns of George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. The name is derived from the two villages Hopedale and Lyon, which was formed when these two place became one.
Uniondale is a great base for exploring the nearby attractions including the Little Karoo Wine Route, the Uniondale watermill, the aloe factory and six Anglo Boer War forts – not to mention the famous site where a female ghost can be seen hitch-hiking.
Willowmore is located between the town of Outdshoorn and George and a mere 85km from the popular seaside town of Plettenberg Bay.
This village offers residents and visitors freedom from the restrictions of time, as it is located off the beaten track and away from the crowds. Here you can spend nights marvelling at stars as you enjoy the peace and quiet.
