Kempton Park Property | Johannesburg

Kempton Park is a large town in Johannesburg’s East Rand area that forms part of the country’s Gauteng province.  Its origins date back to 1903, when Karl Wolff subdivided part of his Zuurfontein farm and sold off residential stands, initially naming the village Kempten after the town of his birth in Bavaria.

Kempton Park lies near the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, which was first built in 1952.  The town gained municipal status in 1992 and is found northeast of Johannesburg and south of Pretoria, forming a buffer between the two urban centres.  There are some excellent schools in this area, including Hoerskool Jeugland, Kempton High and Rhodesfield High School.

Spartan is a large industrial area in Kempton Park that holds a number of chemical manufacturing and other sites.  The Kelvin power station is a large coal plant that is also found in this part of Gauteng.  One of the area’s main claims to fame is the dynamite factory, which was established out of necessity during the Witwatersrand gold rush.  With such a vibrant history, it is no wonder that property in Kempton Park is so popular.
