Kalahari Property | Northern Cape

The Kalahari Desert is part of an enormous sand basin that stretches from the Orange River in the south, up to Angola in the north, to Namibia in the west and Zimbabwe in the east.  The mass of sand was created by the persistent erosion of soft stone formations in the region and the wind shaped ridges are typical of the landscape here.  The climate is typical of any desert region and tends to be extremely hot during the day and really cold at night, with very little rain.

Unlike the dunes in the Namib Desert, the Kalahari’s are stable and not wandering.  The dunes were only stabilized by vegetation in recent geographical history, which is around ten to twenty thousand years ago.  The dominant vegetation in this part of the Northern Cape happens to be grass, thorny shrubs and Acacia trees, which can survive long periods of drought lasting more than ten months of the year.

Although the desert can prove extreme in terms of climate and weather conditions, it still has a unique beauty that many find rewarding.  Perhaps it has to do with the stark isolation or the stunning sand formations.  Whatever the case, places like Kuruman, Kathu, Black Rock and Van Zylsrus have a range of property for sale in the Northern Cape’s Kalahari region.
