Grahamstown Property | Eastern Cape

Grahamstown is a relatively small city found in South Africa’s Eastern Cape and houses the world renowned Rhodes University, making this a buzzing student town during the various academic semesters.  The area has many nicknames, from ‘settler city’ in reference to its role as frontier town, to ‘city of saints’ due to the vast number of churches found here and even ‘city of schools’ referring to the many excellent schools in the vicinity.

Grahamstown has a rich history and this is evident in the number of old buildings and monuments in the area.  Probably the most well known of these is the 1820 Settlers’ National Monument, which was built as a testament to the impact their campaign had on the need for a democratic government.  The Provost Prison is another old building that was constructed under the direction of Sir Benjamin d’Urban and was used as a military prison.

There are a number of beautifully restored historical buildings located in High Street, which resembles something that might be found in an English town.  Grahamstown plays host to a number of festivals every year, the most popular of which is the National Arts Festival held in June/July.  The town buzzes with life and activity when the students are attending classes, but quietens down to a mere whisper during the holidays.  Nevertheless, property in Grahamstown is sought after due to the high demand.
