Graaff Reinet Property | Eastern Cape

Graaff Reinet is a quaint town in the Eastern Cape that is fast becoming the property investor’s dream in terms of location and quality of life.  Established in 1786, the town owes its name to the then governor of the Cape, van der Graaf and his wife Reinet.  At the time, it was only the fourth district in the province to have received a seat of local government or ‘drostdy’.

While Graaff Reinet has long been known as a largely barren and untamed area, it transformed into a trading outpost for white civilization by the mid 1900s.  The town is surrounded by the picturesque Sneeuberg Mountain range, near Nieu Bethesda and still maintains some of its typical 19th century rural charm.  The area forms part of the Karoo National Reserve, which is 15 000 hectares in size and houses another natural wonder in the Valley of Desolation.

Graaf Reinet lies in the horseshoe bend of the Sundays River and is reputed to house more national monuments than any other town in South Africa.  This gives the rural town an added charm in its obvious historical and cultural significance.  More and more investors are looking for property in this part of the Eastern Cape in a bid to escape the rat race and settle down in a safe environment and take advantage of an unbelievably rewarding lifestyle.
