Germiston Property | Johannesburg

Germiston was founded during the early gold rush era that took hold in and around the Johannesburg area in South Africa’s Gauteng province.  Gold was first discovered here by two prospectors on the Elandsfontein farm.  The area was named after the childhood home of one of the prospector’s who grew up near Glasgow.  Both men made their fortunes and the town sprung up as a result of the furious mining activity.

Germiston is home to the world’s largest gold refinery, which was established here in 1921 and is known as the Rand Refinery.  The area developed at a rapid pace to keep up with the expansion caused by a number of other mining ventures.  It is now the sixth biggest residential area in the country, with 70% of the world’s gold passing through the refinery here.

Sports fans might like to know that Germiston is the home of South African rugby referee, Andre Watson and top golfer, Ernie Els.  It even boasts a winner of the Nobel Prize for Physiology in Dr Sydney Brenner, who won the prestigious award in 2002.  Although a largely industrialized area, there is an abundance of residential property in Germiston, as well as a wealth of entertainment and shopping facilities.
