The reason that trout are so prevalent in the rivers around the Dullstroom area has a lot to do with the relatively cold temperatures, particularly in the winter months.  The rivers were originally stocked in 1916 from hatcheries in the Cape Winelands mountains.  The conditions were so good that angling tourism and trout breeding are now the most important industries in this part of Mpumalanga.
