Brakpan Property | Johannesburg

Brakpan is an industrial town in the greater Johannesburg area, which forms part of South Africa’s Gauteng province.  Located in the Witwatersrand gold mining region, it is situated near a major rail network and contains iron works and gold mines as its major industries.  The area’s main claim to fame is that it was home to the world’s highest mine dump, reaching 120 metres above ground level, which is higher than all the pyramids in Egypt.

The mining that takes place in Brakpan is largely organized around gold and uranium production.  The town originated from a small farm called Weltevreden, which housed a brackish pan and this is where the area’s unusual name stems from.  It was near here that the first coal settlement was established after a seam was discovered in 1888.  The first two coal mining shafts were sunk in 1905 and the various mining activities have supported the town ever since.

Brakpan was originally part of nearby Benoni, but grew at such a pace that it was granted municipal status in 1912.  Its central position makes it extremely popular when it comes to residential property, as the major road and rail networks in the area provide easy access to the rest of Johannesburg.
