Benoni Property | Johannesburg

Benoni is a large residential suburb in the East Rand area of Johannesburg, which had somewhat ominous beginnings. In 1881, the surveyor-general at the time was having problems assigning title deeds to unclaimed state property and named the area after Rachel’s son in the Biblical Book of Genesis, meaning ‘son of my sorrows’. Gold was discovered in 1887 and the chairman of the mining company that established itself here set about beautifying the rapidly growing mining town, creating and stocking reservoirs with all kinds of vibrant fish.

Today, Benoni is filled with these reservoirs and the area is dotted with many lakes where people can fish, boat or simply relax by the water. The area is culturally diverse, with residents of every colour and creed. When it comes to industry, the focus has shifted from gold mining to other services catering for the surrounding East Rand towns, such as Brakpan, Nigel and Springs.

The Lakeside Shopping Mall was built to resemble a Mississippi steamboat and is located on one of the lakes in the Benoni area. Willowmoore Park is the site of provincial and one day cricket matches and another of the area’s claims to fame is that it is the birthplace of actress Charlize Theron. There are plenty of tree-lined avenues here that lend a gentle, peaceful atmosphere to Benoni and this ensures that property is always in demand.
